The TSS Framework was developed through a collaborative process that began with the formation of a group of volunteer teachers from various faculties. This group was essential in ensuring the framework addressed a wide range of needs and skill levels as well as the challenges faced by different departments such as in Humanities where the assessment writing could be generated quickly through to the application of data-driven tools in STEM. Surveys were conducted to gather input from staff, providing valuable insights that directly informed the framework’s structure and focus.
The Framework Components
1. Vision and Policy Documentation
This was simply about finding our North Star and giving us something to align to. It established clear objectives and comprehensive guidelines for the adoption of AI and digital tools. This includes defining the scope of AI usage, aligning technology goals with institutional values, and ensuring policies are consistent with ethical and legal standards.
2. Implementation and Monitoring Plan
This plan was to provide a structured roadmap for executing policies, detailing the specific steps, timelines, and roles required. It includes mechanisms for ongoing evaluation, allowing for adjustments to ensure objectives are met effectively.
3. Use Guidelines for Teachers
Here we outlined actionable strategies to help teachers integrate AI tools into their lesson plans and classroom activities. This section emphasises best practices, ethical considerations, and practical examples tailored to various subject areas.
4. Use Guidelines for Students
Again here we were looking to detail the expectations and boundaries for student use of AI tools. This section of the framework focused on encouraging innovative and creative applications while emphasising the importance of maintaining academic integrity and adhering to ethical guidelines.
5. Assessment and Integrity Policy Reviews
It was important that we tried to establish the gold standard in protocols for fair and transparent assessment practices, addressing challenges like plagiarism detection and the verification of student work. It includes guidelines for integrating AI tools into assessments without compromising rigor or authenticity.
6. Professional Development for Teachers
This was probably the crown jewel of our framework. It specifies ongoing training opportunities and resources for educators to stay current with emerging AI technologies. It highlights methods for building teacher confidence and competence in leveraging these tools effectively in their teaching practice.
The professional development plan is split into three levels to accommodate the differing skill and experience levels with the ability for staff to attend only the training they feel they need (whilst still being able to move up or back down a level where necessary).
To quickly summarise the three levels:
1. AI Fundamentals
A basic introduction to AI tools, ethical considerations, and simple lesson integrations.
2. AI Proficiency
More advanced AI integration strategies, including assessment redesign, using AI for differentiated instruction, and managing AI-generated content ethically.
3. AI Expertise
Advanced techniques for creating AI-driven curricula, using AI for data analysis in student performance, or mentoring other teachers in AI integration.
7. Community and Parent Engagement
I won’t lie, this one is still a work in progress, but the plan here was to define strategies for involving parents and the wider community in understanding and supporting AI initiatives. This includes communication plans and workshops to empower our community in supporting their students in AI use so that they are using it appropriately and ethically in their studies.
The TSS Framework represents a comprehensive and practical guide for integrating technology and AI into education. By incorporating feedback from educators and focusing on actionable strategies, it provides a solid foundation for addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by digital tools. This collaborative effort ensures the framework is not only relevant but also adaptable to the evolving needs of our school community.
