Overview

Over the past two years I have built a suite of custom GPTs specifically for Queensland teachers working with the QCAA curriculum. What started as a single tool for Digital Solutions has grown into 24+ GPTs covering Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths Methods, Engineering, Psychology, Marine Science, Physical Education, Agricultural Science, and general teaching workflows. Collectively they have been used in over 10,000 conversations by teachers across the state. OpenAI stops counting at 1,000 per GPT, so actual figures for the most-used tools are likely considerably higher.

The catalyst was a simple problem: writing external exam practice questions for QCAA subjects is time-consuming and requires deep knowledge of the exam format, command verbs, and marking guide conventions. I built the first GPT for Digital Solutions because I needed it myself. When I shared it with teachers in other faculties, requests started coming in for other subjects.

Each subject-specific GPT is built around the actual QCAA syllabus documents, assessment objectives, and past exam structures. They generate technology-free and technology-active questions at the right difficulty, with sample marking guides that reflect how QCAA examiners award marks. Every tool includes a disclaimer that it is not endorsed by QCAA and is intended for practice, not prediction.

Beyond external exam prep, I built a set of general teaching workflow tools, including a Learning Intention and Success Criteria Bot and an Education Adjustment Suggester. The Education Adjustment Suggester is designed as a planning aid for classroom teachers. Give it a student's diagnosis or IEP information and it surfaces practical lesson adjustment ideas the teacher might not have considered. It is explicitly not a compliance tool. It is there to help teachers think through adjustments more thoroughly, not to generate documentation or make NCCD determinations. That distinction matters, and it is built into how the tool frames its outputs. It has been used 800+ times.

The Data Test series came after teachers in science faculties asked for something different. QCAA science subjects include internal data tests that many students find difficult to practise for. The Biology, Chemistry, and Physics Data Test GPTs fill that gap, generating stimulus-based questions with answers and justifications that mirror the internal assessment format.

FEATURES.

External Exam Generators

Subject-specific GPTs for Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths Methods, Engineering, Psychology, Marine Science, Physical Education, Ag Science, and Digital Solutions.

Data Test Series

Stimulus-based data test questions for Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, and Agricultural Science. Includes sample answers and justifications.

Education Adjustment Suggester

A planning aid for classroom teachers. Give it a student's diagnosis or IEP context and it suggests practical lesson adjustments and ideas to support learning. Designed to help teachers think through adjustments, not to generate compliance documentation. 800+ uses.

Teaching Workflow Tools

Learning Intention and Success Criteria Bot and related tools to reduce planning time for everyday lessons.

Digital Solutions Specific

GPTs built specifically for Digital Solutions: the external exam generator and a pseudocode generator.

QCAA-Aligned Outputs

Every question uses QCAA command verbs, reflects assessment objectives, and follows the structure of QCAA marking guides.

Tech Stack

GPT-4o

Underlying model for all custom GPTs, chosen for instruction-following and structured output

Prompt Engineering

Each GPT is built on a detailed system prompt encoding the QCAA syllabus, marking conventions, and output format

OpenAI GPT Builder

Platform for creating, testing, and publishing custom GPTs with access controls

Challenges

  • Encoding enough syllabus context into a system prompt without exceeding token limits or degrading output quality
  • Calibrating question difficulty to match QCAA exam standards, which requires understanding how marks are awarded rather than just what topics appear
  • Writing disclaimers that are honest about limitations without discouraging teachers from using the tools
  • Keeping 24+ GPTs updated as QCAA releases new syllabuses, sample assessment materials, and exam reports
  • Designing output formats that are immediately usable in a classroom without reformatting

Outcomes

  • 24+ custom GPTs live and publicly accessible to any Queensland teacher
  • 10,000+ conversations recorded across the suite (OpenAI's counter caps at 1,000 per GPT, so actual figures for the most-used tools are likely much higher)
  • Covers 12 QLD ATAR subjects plus general teaching workflow tools
  • Education Adjustment Suggester used 800+ times as a planning aid by classroom teachers
  • Biology, Chemistry, and Physics Data Test GPTs each recorded 1,000+ conversations
  • Used by teachers at schools across Queensland, not just The Southport School
