Lead External Exam Marker / Confirmer / Endorser
Overview
Served as a lead marker, confirmer, and endorser for the QCAA's Digital Solutions external examinations. This role involved marking student exams at scale, confirming assessment standards, and endorsing school-designed assessment instruments statewide.
Working with the QCAA gave me a perspective on assessment design and quality assurance at a systems level. As a lead marker, I was responsible for ensuring consistency across hundreds of student responses, calibrating marking standards, and resolving discrepancies.
The confirmer and endorser roles added another layer: reviewing school-submitted assessment items to ensure they met the required standards before students ever sat them. This meant reading and critiquing assessment design from schools across Queensland, providing feedback, and maintaining the integrity of the qualification.
Seeing the marking process from the examiner's side changed how I approach assessment design in my own classroom. Writing assessment that is clear, honest about what it measures, and fair to students is a lot easier when you have spent years on the other end of it.
